Neve ParitzkiJerusalem: Israel's First Cycling Tunnel opens

The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique riding experience and hiking experience which is enjoyed by all.
The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles Jerusalem, the capital city.

Elkin's Ministry Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25 million to the project. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

"The tunnel, which will connect with the Jerusalem Ring Path, will connect the existing cycle routes in the city as well as the ones that are being constructed in its different areas. The tunnel is intended to encourage bicycling within its inhabitants, and also to encourage the green revolution in transportation in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move an important sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

The current works include road construction, the installation of blowers as well as modern electrical and safety systems, to make the tunnel safe for the public to pass through at all times of the year.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to special recreation areas, such as Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo , as well as the natural springs of historical significance Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
